Why This Event Matters
Majestic Hoops is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and all profits from this event will go directly toward feeding local families this Thanksgiving.
Silicon Valley is one of the wealthiest regions in the world, but hunger here is real. About 1 in 6 people in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties receive food from Second Harvest of Silicon Valley every month, and half of them are kids and seniors. The food bank now serves nearly 500,000 people a month, the same level of need as at the height of the pandemic.
The cause is cost of living, not unemployment. A 2026 Second Harvest survey found that 96% of respondents are cutting back on food to afford rent, utilities, and healthcare, and Bay Area grocery prices have climbed 26.8% over the past five years.
The pressure is growing. The federal budget law signed in July 2025 cuts roughly $186 billion from SNAP over the next 10 years, the largest reduction to food assistance ever. About 55,000 Santa Clara County residents are expected to lose their food benefits as a result, and one in three local children face food insecurity and go to school hungry.
For many families, the holidays make that gap even harder to close. A turkey on the table is a small thing that means a lot.
